The Eternal Void, But With Jazz

This episode was recorded two months before the passing of our dear friend and guest, Dr. David L. Collins. Always a kind, gentle, and compassionate soul, he touched the lives of many people during his time on this Earth. We will deeply miss all of the thoughtful contributions that he made within our shared spiritual communities and the way he inspired people to look at the most mundane aspects of life with a sense of reverent awe. Dave was always fond of saying “There's a miracle going on. There really, really is. And it's everything.” After meeting Dave, we couldn't agree more!

For those who knew and loved him personally, we wish you peace and comfort in this time of grief and extend our deepest condolences. For those who didn't have the pleasure of meeting Dave, we hope this episode gives you one small glimpse into the amazing man that he was. Thank you for listening.

Welcome back to The Eternal Void, But With Jazz. Today, we are joined by the late Dr. David L. Collins. Together, we explore the concept of meditation, the cultivation of altered states of consciousness, spiritual and paranormal experiences, and far more.

In his own words, Dave Collins had what he called “an embarrassing amount of education”, including a Masters degree in Contemplative Theology from Berkeley's Graduate Theological Union, a Masters in Buddhist Studies from Harvard, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Interested in those experiences in our lives that mean most to us, he was especially interested in cross-cultural parallels in meditation practices. He felt there was no question, though, that he learned more about human spiritual experience through actually practicing meditation, including taking part in over 50 silent meditation retreats, mostly in the Zen tradition.

Visit Dave’s website at https://utexas.academia.edu/DavidCollins to peruse his collection of academic writing spanning topics such as “The Contemplative’s Socrates” and “Deconstructing Mindfulness.”

Dave’s work has also been highlighted on YouTube, and you can find his videos here:

Jilly Gagnon is currently based in Salem, Massachusetts, but is originally from Minnesota, a fact she’ll likely inform you of within minutes of meeting you. She is the author of eight novels, most recently "What if it’s You?" Her ninth, "Cards on the Table" (cowritten with Lana Harper) will publish in September of 2026. Her humor writing, personal essays, and op-eds have appeared in Newsweek, Elle, Vanity Fair, Boston magazine, and McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, among others.
Come with us. Today we're covering Collaborative Fiction, New Works, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Feminine 'Rage'.
Jilly is "Thrilled about my upcoming book with Lana Harper, CARDS ON THE TABLE. It features a pair of witchy sisters, one who believes wholeheartedly in their gift, and one who is CERTAIN they're just occult-flavored con artists. The quickest pitch: "Two witchy sisters find themselves framed for the disappearance of their elderly client’s substantial trust after her sudden death." A bit more: As descendants of one of the original Salem Witch Trial victims, Tori and Cassie Bishop have strong occult credentials . . . but a trickle of tarot readings won’t pay the bills, and now they’re facing eviction. When they’re offered a massive sum to play “witches in residence” to an elderly widow at her secluded Berkshires mansion, it feels like fate. But from the minute they arrive at the opulent country estate it’s clear: they’ve been dropped into a far more dangerous game than their smoke and mirrors can save them from. The widow, Rose, is in her final days and desperate for the sisters to help with her unresolved spiritual needs before she passes. Her skeptical family and staff, however, are less enthusiastic about the sisters’ presence—with the exception of Rose’s nurse and her beloved great-nephew, who find themselves inexplicably drawn to Cassie and Tori. Thrown into a viper’s nest of competing motives and impenetrable intrigues, the sisters do their best to help Rose. But after Rose’s sudden death, millions of dollars disappear from the estate overnight, and Tori and Cassie quickly become the prime suspects. Someone in the house has framed the Bishop sisters, and in order to clear their names, the two must rely on their powers—magical or otherwise—to unravel the toxic family’s tangled web of greed, resentment, and deceit. If they don’t, Rose won’t be the only victim at Berwyn House. . . ."

Today we're talking with the illustrious Red Pill Junkie about the nature of 'The Other', The Trickster, and incidentally -- The Soul behind the Mask. Join us as we fall down the rabbit hole with Red Pill Junkie.
Red Pill Junkie. Agnostic gnostic, walking conundrum & metaphysical oxymoron (with emphasis in the 'moron' part), the mysterious RPJ leaves a double life: By day he serves as Grand Master in the International Sacred Order of Lucha Libre, but at night he pursues his life-long study of everything considered mysterious and/or 'paranormal' --a term he personally detests. When he's not exploring the web looking for his daily fix of Forteana, he can be found making artsy stuff, fooling around on social media, or offering his services as writer and news administrator at The Daily Grail (dailygrail.com). He also regularly participates in other websites and podcasts like Radio Misterioso and Where Did the Road Go?
He impatiently awaits for the return of the mothership —or nuclear Armageddon— in Mexico City; whichever comes first.
